Modular and sustainable exhibition stands: design and production choices
Criteria for reducing materials, transport, and waste without sacrificing communication, safety, function, or brand experience.
Move from a disposable stand to a system
Environmental improvement is not achieved by adding a plant or a green label. Start by defining expected life, event calendar, cities, storage, transportation, and reconfiguration needs.
ISO 20121:2024 frames sustainability across environmental, social, and economic impacts. Applied to a stand, that means considering materials, energy, accessibility, working conditions, suppliers, waste, and legacy alongside visual performance.
Design for reuse
Favor standard dimensions, reversible connections, durable parts, replaceable pieces, and graphics that update without discarding the structure. Modular systems can change footprint and flow between venues.
Separate the architectural base from campaign layers. Lighting, screens, furniture, color, and graphics can create identity without rebuilding everything. Keep an inventory with measurements, condition, location, and planned uses.
Ask better questions about materials
Request composition, origin, durability, maintenance, separability, and recovery options. Recycled content does not guarantee a better outcome if the material travels inefficiently, survives one use, or cannot be separated at end of life.
Avoid absolute claims such as “zero impact.” Communicate specific, supportable choices: components reused, rented elements, reduced printing, or documented recovery. Precision protects trust.
Improve logistics, energy, and operations
Consolidate trips, use nearby suppliers when viable, and design packaging that protects components for reuse. Plan installation to reduce idle time and review the venue’s waste-separation process.
Size lighting and AV to the job. Turn equipment off outside operating hours and avoid screens without useful content. Include accessible routes, interaction heights, and a non-digital alternative where appropriate.
A circular brief for the next show
- Expected events and configurations.
- Reuse target by component.
- Restricted materials and requested evidence.
- Transport, storage, and maintenance plan.
- Operational energy and waste handling.
- Accessibility, safety, and working conditions.
- Indicators and closeout owner.
The right answer balances communication, operations, total cost, and useful life. Sustainability and performance belong in the same plan.
